June Beginners Weaving Course Weekend - 10th & 11th June '17

This course aims to introduce you to the basics of handweaving on a 4 shaft table loom. You will learn all steps involved in dressing a loom. You will explore a variety of weave structures, yarn types and handweave a length of cloth. Your finished cloth could be used as a table runner, a set of place
mats, wall hangings, a scarf, fabric for cushions etc.

You will cover:

  • designing a colour story
  • reading a weave draft on paper
  • winding a warp
  • dressing the loom
  • handweaving and finishing

You will be taught step by step through the process of dressing a loom
by group demonstrations, discussion, and plenty of 1:1 time with Fiona. You will also design mood boards, technical spec sheets and woven samples as design tools for your finished woven piece. As the classes are limited to 4 students and through the nature of your individual weaving projects, there will be scope to tailor the course to suit you.

After completing this course, you will:

  • have a good understanding of handweaving techniques
  • be confident setting up a table loom
  • have an understanding of woven cloth construction and weave structures
  • have developed design skills : working with colour, pattern and materials
  • knowledge of finishing techniques for woven fabrics

This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some weave experience who wish to explore further.

Fiona has five years plus teaching experience, since graduating with a BDes Hons in Textile Design at The National College of Art and Design Ireland in 2009. Her experience includes working with adults with learning disabilities, secondary school pupils, children and adult education. For further details see About page.
